Synthetic ACTH(4-10) analogue developed for neurological research.
Overview
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of ACTH(4-10), developed at a Moscow research institute in the 1980s for stroke and cognitive impairment research. The hormonal activity of the parent fragment is engineered out and a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added to resist degradation.
Research applications
- BDNF upregulation
- Memory consolidation in research models
- Neuroprotection following ischaemic events
- Dopaminergic and serotonergic modulation
- Neuronal growth and synaptic plasticity
Mechanism of action
Acts on melanocortin receptors and markedly upregulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor, the protein governing neuron growth, maintenance and synaptic plasticity. It also modulates the enkephalin system and influences dopamine, serotonin and acetylcholine signalling.
