One of the few known peptides encoded by mitochondrial rather than nuclear DNA.
Overview
MOTS-C is a mitochondria-derived peptide encoded by the mitochondrial genome — one of only a handful known to science. It functions as a metabolic regulator, with research covering insulin sensitivity, adiposity and exercise response.
Research applications
- Insulin sensitivity in research models
- AMPK activation — the cellular energy sensor
- Diet-induced obesity markers
- Physical endurance and muscle response
- Folate cycle and de novo purine synthesis
Mechanism of action
Under metabolic stress MOTS-C translocates out of the mitochondrion and into the nucleus, where it acts directly on gene expression. It activates AMPK and inhibits the folate-methionine cycle, redirecting metabolism toward fat oxidation.
