Pineal indoleamine hormone and principal circadian timing signal.
Overview
Melatonin is the indoleamine hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness, acting as the body's principal circadian timing signal.
Research applications
- Circadian rhythm entrainment in research models
- MT1 and MT2 receptor binding studies
- Free-radical scavenging and antioxidant assays
- Mitochondrial protection research
- Seasonal and photoperiod signalling
Mechanism of action
Binds MT1 and MT2 G-protein coupled receptors, suppressing neuronal firing in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and shifting circadian phase. It also acts directly as a free-radical scavenger independent of receptor binding.
