Hypothalamic neuropeptide sitting at the top of the reproductive signalling cascade.
Overview
Kisspeptin, encoded by the KISS1 gene, acts as the master regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Research investigates its role in GnRH pulse generation and reproductive endocrinology.
Research applications
- GnRH pulse generation
- LH and testosterone response in male research models
- Fertility research in hypogonadal models
- PCOS and hypothalamic amenorrhoea research
- Acts upstream — no direct steroid activity
Mechanism of action
Binds GPR54 (KISS1R) receptors on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, triggering pulsatile GnRH release. That cascade drives LH and FSH secretion from the pituitary, which in turn drives gonadal hormone production.
