Copper-binding tripeptide reported to influence the expression of ~4,000 human genes.
Overview
GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper complex) is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide found in human plasma, where concentrations decline with age. It is one of the most heavily studied peptides in regenerative and cosmetic research.
Research applications
- Collagen and elastin synthesis pathways
- Wound healing and tissue remodelling
- Antioxidant defence systems
- Inflammatory cytokine suppression
- Angiogenesis
- Gene expression associated with ageing
Mechanism of action
The histidine residue binds a copper ion, and the resulting complex carries copper into the cell. Gene expression studies report influence over roughly 4,000 human genes — upregulating tissue-remodelling pathways and growth factors including TGF-β and VEGF while suppressing inflammatory signalling.
