Synthetic pineal tetrapeptide central to telomerase research.
Overview
Epithalon (also written Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide derived from Epithalamin, a pineal gland extract characterised by Vladimir Khavinson. It is among the most cited compounds in telomere and pineal ageing research.
Research applications
- Telomerase activity in cell culture
- Telomere length in fibroblast models
- Pineal function and melatonin rhythm restoration
- Antioxidant and lipid peroxidation markers
- Lifespan studies in animal models
Mechanism of action
Reported to induce expression of the telomerase catalytic subunit (hTERT), permitting continued telomere elongation in dividing cells. Research also describes normalisation of pineal melatonin secretion and cortisol rhythm in aged models.
